This week we saw the announcement of Scottish Government’s Programme for Government 2017/18 by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, which saw the government pledge to raise awareness of Scotland’s thriving credit union sector.

As well as committing to 40 new school partnerships, though the Junior Savers Fund, the Government has also pledged to work with the sector to deliver a national awareness raising campaign, and identify local opportunities for targeted local activity on funeral poverty.

ABCUL’s Scottish Policy Officer Karen Hurst has been the representative of the credit union sector on the Scottish Government Funeral Poverty Reference Group since it was formed last year, and encouraged the Government to seek opportunities to promote the benefits of credit union membership. We are pleased that the Government has pledged to work with the sector to direct the campaign.

Karen Hurst said: “We are really pleased that the Scottish Government has recognised the important role credit unions can play in policy solutions – we look forward to  working with the Government on this, and have already set up a meeting at the Scottish Parliament next month to bring together the Scottish Government and credit unions to discuss it”.
